Learn to sew making a quilt

Learning to sew by learning to make a quilt is the easiest way to learn. A quilt is flat and is mostly not worn on a cylindrical body. This little table runner is what my beginning quilting class makes. It’s good for any level sewer. What a funny word, sewer, because I am sure I am not an underground conduit for carrying off drainage water and waste matter. Sew, oops, So, what do you get out of taking a class with me? Everything I know that you want to learn and a few things you didn’t know you needed to know. I am an expert in color , I hit the genetic payload in inheriting that gene from my dad. He bought all my mom’s clothes and she looked like a million bucks when they hit the town. I am also an expert teacher and let me tell you why. I remember when I couldn’t do anything arty, crafty, and how frustrating that was. I had an 8th grade art teacher who had no time for anyone who didn’t display talent directly from the womb. None of my art teachers were worth a flip. So I taught myself. I will keep searching for the right words to use to get my students to that aha moment or as I like to call it the light bulb moment. If this class is taught as a 3 hour class the project is the table runner that is flipped and sewn. In a 6 week class a bigger top or many small items can be made.

Memorial Day Sewing

If it were not for all the brave men and women who serve us by fighting for our country I would not be free to sew this Memorial day. My mom and my dad served in WW2, my mom was a army nurse in the Pacific and dad was stationed in Europe.

Later today, I am going to look after the critters Suzie’s house. Suzie is a state  and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator in North Georgia. Help her out

Sewing fun day at Lyndon House

April of ’18 was Fashion Month at the  Lyndon House Arts center with so many young artists discovering the joy of textiles. I dropped in on the last Tuesday class, and joined in. The class was redesigning a men’s shirt into a fashion garment. I wish I had the picture of the whole class with their creations. I was happy that the class included 3 boys who totally rocked the typical rational that sewing is for girls. Tell my grandpa that and he would have a few words to say on that subject, he upholstered as a sideline to working as a steelmaker.  If I get hold of the whole class in their big reveal outfits I will add that picture here!

April Fools and Easter

Is it correct, politically or otherwise to wish someone a Happy April Fools day ? How about Happy Easter?

To err on the side of caution, I wish you both!

Yesterday, I “made” this bag for a sweet girl named Talulah.

I use quotes because I didn’t make it , I bought a blank bag at Michael’s and drew on it. Those of us who make stuff get asked, ”did you make that ?”. This is often followed up with a statement of “I could never do that”. I hear this not so much when I admit to buying a blank bag and drawing on it as when I say, yes, I made this quilt. The quilt pictures  below is going to be submitted to the Lyndon House Full House show in May. The Full House show is comprised of all the artist groups who meet at the Lyndon House. My answer to the “I could never” statement is always ” of course you could”.

Sew Something, Sew happy!

About facing

So face your quilt, don’t let it intimidate you , facing is easier than binding and very forgiving of a technique when done with a little care. I am facing my little April quilt that isn’t quite done in the center but ready to be faced , head on , if you can stand one more pun. I owe a gift of gratitude to Robbi Joy Eclov for this this  particular bent on facing . She is brilliant and apply named for sure. When I get home I will turn the facing to the back and tack it down. The folded triangles in the corners mean I don’t have to do an awkward stop and start on the edges. Sew on, y’all.

Sewing on a Sunday

I am very happy this years daylight savings spring forward day coincides with a Sunday that my church has a 3 pm service. My mind is saying it’s 9 am but my body says NOT! The service is called , Rhythms of Grace, it’s a family worship service where all forms of physical and vocal responses are embraced, every second Sunday of the month.  Rhythms of Grace is an adaptive church service for those for whom conventional worship may be difficult, including those on the Autism Spectrum. For myself it is being hard of hearing that makes this service nice.

I am sewing today on 3 little quiltlets that I plan to give to a family with 2 new foster kids. They already had one little 3 year old boy and now have 2 that are 3 and one that is 2. I met them Wed. night and they are a handful.

I hope you too Sew Something today ! ittakes3march12
